WORK EXPERIENCE

Upon graduating from the University of Missouri-Columbia in 1979, I served as a staff assistant to United States Senator John C. Danforth in Washington, D. C. My duties included correspondence, casework, and research on issues related to constituency and current legislation. I was responsible for all incoming mail and management of correspondence. Upon leaving this position, I entered law school in Columbia, Missouri in 1980.

Prior to graduating from law school, I clerked for the law firm of McAnany, Van Cleave and Phillips in Kansas City, Kansas during the summer of 1981, and during the summer of 1982 I worked as a law clerk for Michael Worthington in Los Angeles, California.

Upon graduating from University of Missouri-Columbia Law School and passing the Missouri Bar examination in 1983, I served as an Assistant Attorney General to Missouri Attorney General John D. Ashcroft.  I began this position in Kansas City and later moved to the Jefferson City office. As an Assistant Attorney General representing the Department of Mental Health, I handled all legal work for various mental health facilities throughout the state, including guardianships, collections against estates, juvenile placements, employment discrimination suits, and advisement on all legal matters. I also acted as legal counsel to the health care facilities as well as to the Department of Mental Health Central Office, advising on matters such as conflicts of interest, interpreting, and formulating Department Operating Regulations.

In the Consumer Protection Division at the Attorney General’s office, I interviewed constituents and investigated their complaints. I negotiated voluntary compliance agreements, conducted civil investigative demands, and prosecuted injunctions against the illegal practices of businesses, including work on a securities fraud case. I also served as legal counsel for the Missouri State Employees’ Retirement System and the Public School Retirement System as well as the Division of Finance and the Division of Savings and Loan.

I served as the Executive Director of the Audrain Medical Center Charitable Foundation from 1985 to 1989.  I worked with a twelve member board of directors and was responsible for all fund-raising activities, endowment and memorial programs and other associated responsibilities of the position.  In 1987, I established my own law office and continued as the Executive Director of the AMC Foundation until 1989.
